UPDATE: If you missed Inside Out South Edition on Monday 22 November, the program is still available online on BBC iPlayer via this link
Families sat outside enjoying the glorious sunshine at the Holiday Park were in for a treat as the camera crew arrived with a collection of caravans that caught everyone’s eye.
The BBC programme had unearthed some Pathe news footage from 1959, which shows an old folding caravan. The team decided to organise a rally of folding caravans owned by enthusiasts from across the south. Jennie Palmer, one of the caravan owners, stays at Hoburne Bashley regularly and helped arrange the day’s filming.
Producer Jane Goddard said: “We like looking at quirky stories and loved the fact that some of these caravans were made in the 1960s and 1970s in Fareham. The icing on the cake was tracking down one of the people in the Pathe footage.”
Ken Strugnell, who lives in Havant and featured in the Pathe film, also came to Hoburne Bashley on Saturday (June 26) to see the old caravans and watch the film again.
The BBC set up an outdoor cinema to show the Pathe film. It was projected onto the side of one of the folding caravans.
Inside Out South presenter, Jon Cuthill, said: “I grew up just around the corner from Bashley and it’s not surprising this area is such a favourite with tourers. These old caravans are just amazing – it’s a whole new world of caravanning fun in a box.”
