Hoburne Cotswold lake and fishing update

An update from Paul Ashton, Maintenance Manager

Welcome to the first dedicated update on the fishing lakes at Hoburne Cotswold — a look at the care, improvements and plans we’re putting in place to protect this special part of the park for years to come.

A Peaceful Escape for All

Our lakes are home to more than just fish — they’re a haven for wildlife, nature lovers, and keen anglers alike. Whether you're casting a line or enjoying the peace and quiet, we want everyone to experience the beauty and serenity of our waters.

Supporting Nature & Sustainability

We’ve been working hard to protect and improve the lake environment — from carefully timed hedge cutting and increased wind flow (to boost oxygen levels), to installing aerators and using oxygen meters in the summer months.

The edges of the lakes, known as marginal areas, are especially important. These are natural breeding grounds that support aquatic life and the food chain for the fish. Thanks to this, our waters are rich in swan mussels and bloodworms — a key part of what makes our fish stocks thrive.

Fish Stocking & Netting

In April 2025, we completed our regular lake netting with AE Fisheries. This two-day process helps us monitor fish health and numbers, and we were thrilled to see some familiar faces — including 'Rubber Lips', weighing in at a staggering 55lb 8oz!

Behind the scenes, we’ve been nurturing a new generation of fish. Over 250 were hand-reared from last year’s spawning by our own Matt Ridler, with 200 fed daily in stock ponds. These have now been introduced across our lakes and are growing steadily.

We’ve already begun collecting eggs from this year’s early spawning to continue supporting our natural fish population.

Fishing for Everyone

From expert anglers to complete beginners, we’re here to help everyone enjoy time by the water. The lake next to the indoor pool and tennis courts is ideal for silver fishing, especially for children or those new to the sport. Expect to catch Roach, Rudd, Perch, Tench — and maybe even the odd Dace.

Need advice or support getting started? Pop into Reception or speak to the team — we’re always happy to help. And don’t forget, local supplies are available at Tackle Den, just across Spine Road.

Respecting the Water & Wildlife

We kindly ask everyone to respect the lakes, fellow anglers, wildlife, and the fish. That means checking the fishing rules at Reception, avoiding litter, and keeping an eye out for anything unusual — if you spot anything of concern, please let us know.

The lakes are open from 6pm–10pm on the far bank away from Heron View for evening fishing — perfect for those peaceful golden hour sessions.
